EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing
EMDR therapy is an evidence-based form of psychotherapy based on the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model, which suggests that our current level of resiliency and health is directly related to how past memories of adverse life events or traumas are stored in our brains.
Adequately processed memories are the basis of healthy coping and adaptive responses to life stressors, and inadequately processed memories are the basis of maladaptive behaviors and beliefs, as well as overwhelming emotions and physical sensations that make it more difficult to cope with stress.
In short, this is a therapeutic treatment that helps individuals heal from the symptoms and emotional distress resulting from a disturbing event or experience.
EMDR focuses on the memory of the experience, and work is done to change the way that it is stored in the brain. This change promotes new ways of thinking and coping with distressing events.
EMDR can be modified to fit your individual needs or goals. One of the benefits of this modality is that it does not require talking about the distressing event, and you are able to process your trauma in an empowering environment.
I have been trained to use EMDR with infants, children, adolescents, and adults.
I have specific protocols that can help infants who are having difficulty adjusting to life earthside as well as to help infants heal from a difficult or traumatic birth.
For children with sensory issues or who struggle with ADHD, there are specific protocols to help them manage their distress, and they are beneficial for even the younger kids or those who are non-verbal because EMDR is focused on one’s brain healing itself.
In addition to being an essential Trauma Treatment intervention, EMDR is also good for:
Anxiety
Depression
Addiction
OCD
Intense Feelings
Self-esteem
Bullying
Grief
Loss
Sensory Processing Issues
Post-traumatic stress disorder
I am excited to be able to provide EMDR alongside play therapy in my office, and it is a perfect complementary modality to my training in Trauma Play.
